How to Register for Tax with SARS

During this tax season most people are asking the question of how do you register to tax with Sars? Well, the South African Revenue Service (SARS) provides various methods for registering for taxes. These methods cater to different needs and circumstances, ensuring that everyone has an accessible path to fulfilling their tax obligations. Here are the three primary ways you can register for tax with SARS:

1. Automatic Registration via SARS eFiling

If you’re new to SARS eFiling and do not possess a tax reference number, the system will automatically generate one for you upon your initial registration. A key prerequisite is having a valid South African ID.

Steps to Register on eFiling:

  • Navigate to the ‘Register’ button.
  • Follow the on-screen prompts.

You can also utilize the SARS MobiApp to register, following the identical procedure. For additional guidance, SARS provides instructional videos on their YouTube channel that walk you through the registration process.

2. Registration through Employer via SARS eFiling

Employers can facilitate tax registration for their employees using SARS eFiling. The service includes a specific function that allows this kind of submission. Detailed guidance on this is available in the “Guide on Tax Reference Number (TRN) Enquiry Services on eFiling.”

3. In-Person Registration at a SARS Branch Office

You can also opt for in-person registration at your local SARS branch office. A service consultant will assist you through the process.

Note: Bring all relevant supporting documents when visiting a branch office.

How to Confirm Your Registration Status

If you’re uncertain about whether you are registered, you have multiple ways to check:

  • Consult your employer
  • Utilize the SARS online query function
  • Contact the SARS Contact Centre at 0800 00 7277

Important: SARS will only disclose your tax number to you or to an individual who has either Power of Attorney or is your tax practitioner.

Requesting a Notice of Registration (IT150)

The IT150 document contains your tax reference number. You can request this notice through various channels:

  • Online query
  • SARS MobiApp for registered eFilers
  • Lwazi ChatBot available on eFiling and the SARS MobiApp
  • SMS to 47277
  • USSD by dialing *134*7277#

As of July 2022, SARS has implemented automatic registration for individuals based on third-party information. This initiative aims to ensure that all individuals who have not yet registered, but for whom third-party data exists, can easily complete their income tax returns. Such individuals will receive an SMS and letter from SARS providing further details on accessing SARS services and outlining their respective rights and obligations.
