Afrobeats is gaining worldwide recognition, and this was greatly demonstrated at the 2021 Grammy Awards with Nigerian stars Wizkid and Burna Boy both bagging a Grammy.
The 2021 Grammy was a major win for Africa, starting from the South African comedian Trevor Noah being the first African to host the Grammys, and the night ending with 2 Afro beats giants walking away with the prestigious trophies.
Burna Boy took home his first Grammy for the Best Global Music Album category while Wizkid also won his first Grammy for Best Music Video for his song Brown Skin Girl which he collaborated with Beyonce.
Burna Boy was nominated for the second consecutive year and managed to claim a win with his sophomore album Twice As Tall album.
In 2020 Burna, whose real name is Damini Ogulu, was nominated for his debut album African Giant but lost to Angelique Kidjo after being nominated in the same category.
Angelique Kidjo dedicated her 2020 Grammy to Burna Boy in what most people would say was a prophetic blessing which came to pass.
In his acceptance speech Burna urged Africans to realise that what ever they want to achieve they can achieve it.
Wizkid’s win for the music video for Brown Skin Girl was praised for its fashion forward celebration of black and brown female beauty across the world.
